Huddersfield’s James ‘Jammie Dodger’ Wilson was crowned the first BDO Daily Mirror World Trophy winner last night when he waltzed away from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom with the title.

The champion beat Ross ‘The Boss’ Montgomery 13-11 to win the new title. On hearing the result James collapsed to the floor, before getting up and punching his fists in triumph before the packed crowd.

He said: ”To win this, the first ever one, you would not believe what this means to me.”

“I came here this weekend having had a few up and down games, but I continued to fight back and, now to be a champion, feels amazing.”

In the Ladies final Anastasia Dobromyslova beat Lakeside World Champion Lisa Ashton 9:7 in a thrilling match that went to a tie break.

The final followed six days of action at the tower and the trophy is the first in a long series of new events organised by BDO Events, the commercial partner of the BDO.

Stephen Holland, BDO Events director, said: “We have been so pleased with the response to this, our first competition. The crowds have been amazing.

“We want to inject new blood into the game at grass roots level so it was nice to see some younger players taking part. It’s an exciting time for darts.”
